Treatment
of Contaminated Soils
Environmental Soil Management, Inc., has the largest treatment facilities
for contaminated soils in the Northeast and has the capability to treat soils
contaminated with oils, solvents, PCBs, coal tars, fuels and other constituents.
ESMI has successfully completed more than 8,000 soil remediation projects
that included the treatment of more than 1.75 million tons of contaminated
soil. The Company is permitted to treat up to 340,000 tons per year of contaminated
soils that are not state or federal hazardous waste at its facilities in New
York and New Hampshire.
For larger environmental remediation projects, ESMI owns high-capacity portable
treatment plants capable of treating soils at the project site which
eliminates transportation costs and its associated liability.
ESMIs treatment process achieves a greater than 99% destruction efficiency,
providing clients a complete guarantee that the contaminated material has
been successfully cleaned to a specified cleanup level. ESMIs treatment
utilizes a process called thermal desorption a proven technology that
permanently destroys hydrocarbons. The contaminated materials are heated in
a rotary dryer to temperatures between 350-1,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The extracted
contaminants are destroyed in an oxidizer. Then, flue gases are cooled, and
the material is passed through a baghouse to remove particulates.
Soils treated by ESMI are either returned to the customer or recycled into
a variety of construction materials. Thermal desorption does not damage the
soils characteristics, which enables the treated soil to support future
biological activity.
