MILLENNIUM PIPELINE - MONGAUP / RIO RESERVOIR AREA IMPROVEMENTS

Owner: Millennium Pipeline
Site: Mongaup / Rio Reservoir, Forestburgh, NY
Value: $219,444
Project Objectives:
Construct a hiking trail and an eagle-viewing shelter

Scope of Work:
  • Millennium Pipeline, LLC entered into an agreement with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to install improvements to the stretch of DEC land utilized for the right of way of their new buried natural gas transmission pipeline.
  • Objectives of first contract included the construction of a handicap accessible eagle viewing blind with a trail leading to it from the existing parking area, along with another one-mile long hiking trail along the pipeline right of way . D.A. Collins was responsible for developing the trail components and mapping out the pathway in order to maximize user friendliness and enjoyment.
  • Project progressed with a small crew. Mostly small tools were used, but equipment also included a mini track hoe and land rover. Grey’s Woodworking was outsourced to fabricate the eagle viewing shelter.
  • The only major site preparation needed was to come up with the layout for both trails and location of the eagle-viewing shelter. Since the shelter was to be handicap accessible, the trail to it required careful planning to maneuver through the trees and downhill with ease.
  • Use of on-site resources was a large portion of this job. Cut down trees were utilized to make bridges for stream crossings and as borders to the trail in some places and rocks from the site and surrounding area were used to line a majority of the trail and form steps and platforms where needed. This tactic was both economical and aesthetic, since outside material delivery would be difficult and time consuming and would look out of place in this natural setting.
  • Site health and safety concerns included typical equipment safety, along with biohazards such as poison ivy, poison oak, and animals including timber rattlesnakes and black bears.
