RETAINING WALL REPLACEMENT ALONG THE BASKET CREEK

Owner: US Army Corps of Engineers & Delaware County DPW
Site: Delaware Co. Route 28 Hancock, NY
Value: $1,700,000
Project Objectives:
Replace existing stone laid retaining wall with a post-and-concrete panel wall and reconstruction County Route 28.

Scope of Work:
  • The existing stone laid wall was built in the 1930s with stone from nearby quarries to support County Route 28. The new retaining wall consisted of precast concrete panels that were originally used as floor slabs for the New City Subway system.
  • The purpose of the project was to address deterioration due to the erosion of the old stone retaining wall and also address the associated risk of roadway failure in future flood events.
  • The scope of work involved removing existing roadbed to bedrock, removing the failing dry laid stonewalls, and constructing 580’ of post-and-concrete panel wall.
  • Initial site operations were installing a temporary detour which included two temporary bridges that were supplied by Delaware Co. DPW (70’ and 56’) to span Basket Creek in two locations. This was to avoid a detour that would be about 20 miles around the project site.
  • Hayward Baker (Drilling Subcontractor) drilled 58ea 2’ diameter 8’deep rock sockets for the 30’ long steel H-pile posts. DAC set the H-piling, poured the sockets and installed the supplied precast panels into the web of vertical h-piling to complete the wall. DAC also built and set a 15’ x 12’ driveway bridge for the adjacent landowner as part of the scope of work.
  • The project also included approximately 5,000 tons of stone and fill and approximately 1,500 tons of asphalt for the reconstruction of CR 28.
  • Since the Basket Creek is classified as a trout stream, the water work had to be completed by September 15th.
