GREAT ESCAPE LODGE AND PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE

Owner: Great Escape Six Flags
Site: Queensbury, NY
Value: $6,500,000
Project Objectives:
Construction of new parking lot for theme park with a connecting pedestrian bridge over NYS
Route 9.

Scope of Work:
  • The project included a site development package for a 38,000 square foot indoor WaterPark housed inside a 200-suite Lodge.
  • The construction of the bridge put an end to long lines of traffic that were routine during the summer months in this area. Two traffic lights, used to allow pedestrians access to the park, were removed and traffic now moves smoothly through the area. It also eliminated the safety hazard created by large numbers of patrons, including children, crossing heavily traveled Route 9.
  • An improved intersection with a new traffic signal was constructed at the intersection of Route 9 and Glen Lake Road. This intersection also allows access to the new entrance road to the lodge and parking areas.
  • Clearing and site preparation required major quantities of work including 200,000cy of site excavation and fill; 14,000 tons of asphalt paving and installation of: permanent soil and erosion control features, a new drainage system, water lines, landscaping and lighting.
  • Construction of the pedestrian bridge required 12,000cy of excavation and fill, 12,000sf of mechanically stabilized earth retaining walls, 520cy of cast-in-place concrete, steel girders, fencing and decorative stone facing.
  • A unique feature of the work was the construction of mechanically stabilized earth retaining walls that support the handicap accessible ramps and bridge abutments.
  • Our project management team worked closely with the owner and bridge designer to relocate the bridge eliminating the need for steel bearing piles thereby reducing construction costs by over $250,000.
  • The package included construction of a 12 acre parking area that surrounds the lodge and a new, quarter mile entrance road to the lodge from Route 9.
·          A new 120 foot pedestrian bridge was constructed over NYS Route 9 to enable pedestrian access to the park.
